A message in a bottle thrown into the English sea by a four-year-old girl has received a reply - from Australia.

Alesha Johnson sent the bottle on its way from Morecambe Bay in Lancashire last July.

She had drawn a picture of herself and written a note saying, 'My name is Alesha. If you get this message, please write back'.

This week, she got a reply from Bob, describing himself as a 10-year-old boy from Perth, Western Australia.

He said he found the bottle in a boatyard and asked his father to look up how far it had travelled on the internet.

The bottle had gone 9,000 miles.

Bob's reply included a map pinpointing exactly where the letter was found.

Alesha threw the bottle into the sea as part of a nursery school project about the seaside.

Doreen Johnson, the nursery manager, said, 'We were all very excited when the letter from Australia arrived addressed to Alesha. We never dreamed the bottle would go that far, it's amazing'.

The Australian boy did not send his address because he is moving house, but promised to write again soon with his new details.
