The March issue of PSM has an update on Sony’s online strategy, and if their information holds true, Microsoft might have something to worry about when it comes to the successor of the PlayStation Online service.

The magazine claims that U.S. developers have received final PS3 development kits and they have already met with Sony in order to make their games compatible with the yet-unnamed online service.

“Sony is dead serious about it” a developer who wants to remain anonymous told PSM. “They’ve declared a ‘full assault’ on the latest version of Xbox Live. They are committed to matching Xbox Live feature for feature and then some”

The magazine claims that Sony’s service will include much more than simple leaderboards and matchmaking.

Supposedly, the new online service is being designed to also work with the PSP and go beyond gaming functions: “Think one, big PlayStation network”.

Unfortunately, we know that everything that comes or is related to Sony’s PlayStation must be taken with a grain of salt as in the past the company has hyper-hyped its products, which later proved to offer less features and capabilities than those promised. Emotion engine, Toy-Story-like graphics…broadband engine next?

Only time will tell if Sony can match Microsoft’s online service. As far as beating it? That’s another story altogether.

More hype built up by Sony, they are not doing themselves any favours by Hyping things up so much. Just hope they can deliver on all promises now which is doubtful.
