Snow, poor visibility ruled as culprit for canceling practice run

SAN SICARIO, Italy - The women’s Alpine skiing combined downhill at the Turin Winter Olympics was postponed to 1 p.m. local time, 7am eastern time on Friday due to bad weather.

Organizers said the downhill will begin one hour later than scheduled and from the super-G start, making the course almost 1,640 feet shorter.

The two slalom legs of the combined are due to take place in Sestriere later on Friday.

At least 2 inches of snow fell on the downhill venue of San Sicario overnight and driving snow continued throughout the morning adding to poor visibility. An improvement in conditions is likely to be needed if the race is to take place at the new time.

Thursday’s training run on the downhill course was cancelled because of the first snowfalls of the Games and low visibility.
