Former Commonwealth Games Boxing champion, Godfrey Nyakana, has offered his compatriots a reward of one million Ugandan shillings for gold medal success at the Games.
Nyakana won Lightweight gold at the 1990 Auckland Games, and is keen to see his country's strong Boxing tradition continue in Melbourne.
“There is need for motivation if results are to be attained,” Nyakana declared.
Along with the one million shilling (AUD$750) bounty for gold, Nyakana has offered silver medallists 500,000 and bronze winners 250,000 shillings.
“I have four million shillings set aside, just in case the entire Uganda team strikes gold,” he said.
“We have a talented side. I am therefore confident that a big portion if not all the cash prizes will be won."
Uganda's podium success in 2002 came with silver in both the Light Heavyweight and Light Welterweight divisions.
The Ugandan squad for Melbourne includes Martin Mubiru (Flyweight), Atanus Mugerwa (Bantamweight), Sharif Bogere (Featherweight) and Edward Akora (Light Welterweight).
The Boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games will take place from 17 – 23 March at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, with the medal bouts taking place on 25 March.
