So this is what happens when you refuse to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. Shane Mosley, fresh off consecutive victories against Fernando Vargas, will meet Luis Collazo on Feb. 10 in Las Vegas.

After beating Vargas the second time, Mosley was asked about taking on Mayweather. Sugar Shane complained about a loose tooth and said he needed to relax. Mosley sounded terrible and seemed scared to fight Mayweather.

It was sad.

So Mosley, after getting his teeth or tooth fixed, we guess, and talking it over with the family, decided to fight Kermit Cintron. Wow, you bypass a chance to fight Mayweather to meet Kermit Cintron.

Good boxing decision. Cintron has nothing to lose and all to gain, while Mosley, should he lose, isn’t finished - he’ll get his rematch - but he won’t be considered a top fighter again.

But there was a problem with this bout. Cintron hadn’t signed the contract. This is the stuff that hurts boxing. Get the guys in the ring and fight. Simple. Don’t announce a fight, which the promoters did, until the contracts are signed.

So, Cintron was out and now Collazo, a good fighter from Brooklyn, N.Y. steps in. Yes, Mosley doesn’t need this fight, much like he didn’t need a dentist. A victory over Collazo will not improve his profile in the fight game, and if anything, it continues to raise questions about Mosley’s ability to take on the best fighters.

After his consecutive losses to Winky Wright in 2004, there were questions about Mosley’s ability to defeat the top fighters in the sport. Then there are the questions regarding Mosley’s skill level. He’s still fast, but lacks the pop to hurt anybody at junior middleweight. Maybe that’s why he moved down to welterweight. At that weight class he should dominate, and he shouldn’t be afraid of anyone there.

But for some reason, he’s afraid of Mayweather.

Now, let’s be honest here, when Mosley defeats Collazo, and that’s not a guarantee, he’ll be asked about his next fight. Mosley will probably say he wants the winner of Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather, who fight May 5. Mosley had his chance to fight Mayweather and didn’t express interest for a bout against Cintron and eventually Collazo.

Give Mayweather and De La Hoya credit for stepping up and taking on each other. Kermit Cintron and Luis Collazo are not in the same class as Mayweather-De La Hoya.
Good competition, yes, but not great. Mosley is at the stage of his career where he needs to meet great fighters.

At least Collazo is willing to do this.

We all thought Ricky Hatton was headed toward superstardom but he barely defeated Collazo in Boston last May. Collazo went down in the first round on a flash knockdown and rocked Hatton in the 12th. The fight was much closer than 115-112, which two judges scored in favor of Hatton. The third judge had it right at 114-113. Collazo should have received a rematch, but instead he beats some dude, Artur Atadzhanov, in Phoenix.

Well, Mosley has Collazo now and if he’s not careful, Don King will be smiling at the end of the night.

It seems like that to me too. I doubt he will fight Mayweather even if he wins this fight.
