LAS VEGAS, United States (AFP) - Potential record-setting ticket sales for the May 5 boxing showdown here between undefeated Floyd Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya will begin January 27, promoters announced.

World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion de la Hoya enters 38-4 with 30 knockouts while WBC welterweight champion Mayweather, 37-0 with 24 knockouts, moves up a weight class in the showdown of superstar US fighters.

"Golden Boy" de la Hoya has been a world champion in six weight divisions while "Pretty Boy" Mayweather has won world titles in four classes.

Ticket prices run from 2,000 dollars to 150 dollars and with interest high, the live gate income at MGM Grand Garden Arena could reach 18 million dollars.

That would break the state record in boxing-haven Nevada, the 16.8 million dollars pulled in by Britain's Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield in their 1999 showdown here for the undisputed heavyweight crown.

"We already have received an unprecedented amount of inquiries at our offices regarding tickets," said Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer. "The response is amazing."

I'm not surprised that interest in this fight is high, since it will probably end with De La Hoya getting retired and ending a great career on a humilitating loss.
