A suspected car thief has been arrested in Finland - thanks to a DNA sample taken from blood found inside a mosquito.

Police inspecting a dumped stolen car in Lapua last June noticed a full-looking mosquito, reports the Daily Mail.

It was sent to a lab for testing, and the DNA was found to match the sample of a man on the police register.

The suspect insisted he did not steal the car, claiming he hitchhiked and was given a lift by a male driver.

A prosecutor will decide if the evidence is solid enough for charges to be pressed.

Police inspector Sakari Palomaeki said: "It is not easy to find a small mosquito in a car. This just shows how thorough the crime scene investigation was.

"It is not usual to use mosquitoes. In training we were not told to keep an eye on mosquitoes at crime scenes."
