Default Politicians pay respects to Hartes

Northern Ireland's first and deputy first ministers have joined hundreds of fellow mourners at the wake of murdered honeymooner Michaela McAreavey.

Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness paid their respects to the young teacher's devastated parents - Tyrone gaelic football team manager Mickey Harte and his wife Marian - at the family home near Ballygawley, Co Tyrone.

Stormont sports minister Nelson McCausland, enterprise minister Arlene Foster and Justice Committee chairman Lord Morrow were also among the delegation that spent around 45 minutes in the house.

Such was the number wishing to sympathise with the Hartes and Michaela's grieving husband John, a park-and-ride facility from designated car parks was set up to take people to the home.

The body of the tragic newlywed was carried into the house on Friday night, ending the long journey from Mauritius where she was strangled on Monday after disturbing thieves robbing her room in the luxury Legends Hotel.

A public wake is being held in the home over the weekend before the 27-year-old's funeral on Monday at the nearby St Malachy's chapel, where she married sweetheart John just over two weeks ago.

Irish President Mary McAleese will join a string of other dignitaries at the requiem mass.

Michaela's widower was on the flight into Belfast that brought his wife of just 12 days back in her coffin on Friday, wearing her engagement and wedding rings on a chain around his neck. Hundreds of people flanked the road to the Harte home as the cortege made its way there.

Three employees of the hotel have been charged in connection with the death, two with murder and one with conspiracy to murder. One of the murder accused, room attendant Avinash Treebhoowoon, 29, has confessed to the killing.

His co-accused, floor supervisor Sandip Moneea, 41, has made no such admission. It is understood Treebhoowoon admitted the crime to officers after the third accused, and fellow room attendant Raj Theekoy, 33, made a statement implicating him and Moneea.
