Default Kingdom Hearts II PS2 Preview

Kingdom Hearts II PS2 Preview from GamePro.com

When Disney and Square characters unexpectedly joined forced for the first time in 2002, minds were blown, reactions were uncertain, and predictions wavered, but ultimately fans were pleased. After all, what could be better than putting two very distinguished icons in one game? Here's an idea: Releasing a highly anticipated sequel with new characters and features.

Sora the Same, But Not Really
First things firsts: The one thing that would stand out the most would be the first five hours of the game. It's surprising, confusing and enticing, messing with any KH fans' expectations. It should also be noted, though, that unless you've played Chain of Memories, you will more likely be confused, in terms of storyline and character identification. The feel of the game is also noticeably darker, perhaps a surprise seeing as how any Disney element is usually light-hearted.

    The Many Forms of Power
In most cases, a new sequel means tweaked and/or introduction of new gameplays, maybe some new characters and maps. When it lacks any or all of those elements, the chances of the sequel's survival in the gamer wilderness are slim. Fortunately, Kingdom Hearts 2 does fulfill its end of the unofficial successful sequel agreement.

In terms of game controls and battle options, there are a few tweaks that look promising. There is an introduction of Drives; contrary to your Freudian belief, Sora's drive can transform him into different forms, each wielding a different power. There are also Combos and Abilities Sora can perform for a more victorious and efficient battle. The camera is also freestanding rather than merely panoramic; the right analog stick controls the camera, while the D-pad is used to navigate your commands. A swift change on Square Enix's behalf; the FPS-like analog scheme is a well-appreciated improvement. In terms of in-game features, there is now a Moogle who will fuse materials you will pick up from monster drops and make rings that give you stats. Perhaps the most anticipated character in the game is Captain Jack Sparrow, with his amazing Johnny-Depp-like similarities.

There will probably be some minor configurations in terms of control scheme for the US release of Kingdom Hearts 2, but so far it looks like a game every Kingdom Hearts fan should be anticipating.

The first Kingdom Hearts was without a doubt one of the most revolutionary RPG games to hit the scene since Final Fantasy 7 back in 1997. It offered a fresh story, unqique characters, the comical instincts of Disney, and some of the best gameplay ever to hit a console RPG. It wasn't turned based it was simply action which made it that much better. Kingdom Hearts 2 shouldn't be any differn't. Along with better graphics, a new story and enhanced gameplay I expect this to be RPG of the year for 2006.
