Default Home Alone Boy In Care After Fire

A three-year-old boy is in the care of social services after being found alone in a burning house.

The toddler was found sitting on the floor of a locked bedroom with a doughnut and a bowl of milk by his side, according to the News Shopper newspaper.

He was rescued from a first-floor room in a maisonette in Deptford, south-east London, just after 9.30am on Friday.

Watch manager John Banks told the newspaper: "We have never seen anything like this. We have found kids alone before - but not locked in a room in a burning building."

Two fire engines were sent to the home in Lynch Walk, where crews wearing breathing apparatus found the little boy alone.

The boy's mother, who is in her 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of child neglect, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

She has been bailed to return to a South London police station in December.

A 45-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.

The toddler was taken to hospital for checks and then discharged, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said.

The fire, which damaged the ground floor of the property, was brought under control in 20 minutes, London Fire Brigade said.

Officers from the Met Police's Child Abuse Investigation Unit are continuing their inquiries.

    Default Immigration limit plan slammed

Immigration minister Phil Woolas is under fire after calling for a limit on the number of migrants coming to Britain.

In his strongest comments on the subject since taking up the job earlier this month, Mr Woolas said that increasingly tough economic conditions made immigration "extremely thorny".

And he said that the Government would not allow the population to expand endlessly.

But Keith Best, the chief executive of the Immigration Advisory Service, said immigration quotas were not workable in a modern trading economy.

"What are you going to say to the employer who is desperate to fill a job, but can't find anyone suitable in the European economic area?" he said. "Are you going to say 'sorry, the quota has been filled, you'll have to wait till next year'?

"What we want to see is migration benefiting the economic and social needs of the UK, and unfortunately when politicians start interfering, you end up with a command and control economy that we used to see in eastern Europe before the fall of communism."

With the economy facing difficulties, the UK was likely to see more unemployment in the coming years, and the Government should turn its attention to making sure the workforce can be retrained to meet new needs, he said.

"I am surprised that a Government minister, however new to the job, is talking in terms of the need for a quota, when that is Conservative Party policy," he added.

Mr Woolas said it had been too easy for immigrants to get into the UK in the past, and it would become harder in the future.

Habib Rahman, of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said: "This could drive a coach and horses through any notion of managed migration through the Government's new points-based system...on which it held long and detailed consultations before unveiling it as the answer to the country's economic needs."

Default 'No-one can judge son over suicide'

The mother of a paralysed rugby player who travelled to Switzerland to commit suicide wrote about his ordeal on a newspaper website, it has emerged.

Julie James' 23-year-old son Daniel died at a Swiss clinic on September 12, following a rugby accident which left him paralysed from the chest down in March last year.

Mrs James, from Sinton Green, Worcester, wrote about his death in a discussion about euthanasia on the Daily Telegraph website in which she criticised the "well meaning person" who reported the family to the police.

The email said Mr James had found life "unbearable" and revealed he had tried to commit suicide three times.

Travelling to Switzerland was his only option, she wrote.

The email continued: "Whilst we were away some 'well meaning' person involved with social services took it upon herself to call the police.

"This person had never met Dan before or after his accident and obviously gave no consideration for our younger daughters who had seen their big brother suffer so much, and the day before had to say goodbye to him.

"I hope that one day I will get the chance to speak to this lady and ask if she had a son, daughter, father, mother, who could not walk, had no hand function, was incontinent, and relied upon 24-hour care for every basic need and they had asked her for support, what would she have done?!"

Mrs James went on to write "nobody but nobody should judge him".

West Mercia Police have launched an investigation. Police said they had been in contact with a man and a woman following the death.

Default Mother of blaze toddler put on bail

The mother of a three-year-old boy found alone in a burning house has been released on bail by police.

The toddler is in the care of social services after being rescued from a first-floor room in a maisonette in Deptford, south-east London.

Two fire engines were sent to the home in Lynch Walk, where crews wearing breathing apparatus found the little boy alone.

According to local newspaper the News Shopper, he was left in a locked bedroom with a doughnut and a bowl of milk.

Watch manager John Banks told the newspaper: "We have never seen anything like this. We have found kids alone before - but not locked in a room in a burning building. If we had got there 15 minutes later then we probably would have been looking at a fatality."

The boy's mother, who is in her 40s, was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, Scotland Yard said.

She has been released on police bail until a date in December, a spokesman said.

A 45-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.

The toddler was taken to hospital for checks then discharged, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

The fire, which damaged the ground floor of the property, was brought under control in 20 minutes, LFB said.

Default Gangs suspected in fatal shooting

A man shot dead in the street may have been the victim of gang feuding, it has emerged.

Ashley Kemete, 20, was gunned down in White Hart Street, Kennington, south London.

Paramedics and the air ambulance were called but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Locals told how there were gangs in the area though police said they were keeping an open mind as to motive at this stage and declined to comment on whether it was gang related.

One woman, who refused to give her name, said there were many gangs around there.

She said: "There are five gangs in the immediate area. They fight on Friday nights, it's all about drugs and territory. We can expect to see some terrible repercussions from this."

Abdul Momen, who works at Taste of India takeaway, said the murder was "shocking".

"Normally it's just car accidents in Kennington Lane but this is very serious. There's so many gangs in this area so maybe it's linked to them."

A post-mortem examination will be held at Greenwich Mortuary.

Detective Inspector Tony Broughton of the Metropolitan Police's Trident unit, which investigates gun crime within the black community, said: "This murder happened in a busy part of town, just after nine o'clock on a Friday night. We know there were many people in the area. Several witnesses have already come forward, but there will be others who saw something or know something. We need those people to get in touch with us."

    Default Father arrested over body-in-woods

The father of a 19-year-old woman whose skeletal remains were found in woodland in a seaside town has been arrested on suspicion of murder, sources said.

Medical records were used to help establish that the remains belonged to Victoria Couchman and her family have been informed, police said.

Children playing in Redgeland Wood, near Wishing Tree Reservoir in the Queensway area of Hastings, East Sussex, found a human skull on Monday afternoon.

Further forensic searches revealed other remains, including an upper left leg, pelvic bone and tibia, which were discovered near each other and did not appear to be buried.

Sussex Police announced that a 45-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Sources said the man was Ms Couchman's father.

In a short statement, police said: "Police investigating the discovery of a body believed to be that of 19-year-old Victoria Couchman from Hastings have this evening arrested a 45-year-old local man on suspicion of murder."

Details of a cause of death have not been disclosed by Sussex Police who earlier said it was important to establish how Ms Couchman ended up in the woods.

Inspector Becky Newman said: "Police investigating the discovery of human remains found in Redgeland Wood believe they have established the identity of the victim. From medical records, it is believed she was Victoria Couchman, 19 years of age, from an address in the local area."

Speaking of the identity of the remains earlier, Detective Chief Inspector Adam Hibbert said: "This is a significant breakthrough in the inquiry and it is vital for us to now establish the circumstances to how Victoria died and came to be in Redgeland Wood."

Police said that around 90% of the skeleton had been recovered and that the bones were degraded. It was originally thought the remains had been in the woods for up to ten years, but following further discoveries police said they think they had been there for around 18 months.
