Benidorm is being put forward as one of the wonders of the world.

A French geographical expert says the Spanish resort is up there with Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal, reports the Daily Mirror.

Professor Philippe Duhamel claims the resort should be a World Heritage site. He reckons its skyline and 600 bars and chip shops catering for up to 1.5million Brits a year make it unique.

He says: "It is the Dubai of Europe - known worldwide as a remarkable site for what is understood by mass tourism.

"For years, people spoke badly of it, but over time it has gained value like other examples of architectural heritage."

Benidorm mayor Manuel Perez Fenoll commented: "It would be a great honour for us."
