Roads - including the M25 and the M6 - were plagued by heavy traffic through the evening.
Lanes were closed on the M23 in Surrey and the M6 in Greater Manchester after separate accidents.
Meanwhile, an electrical fire in a building above Hammersmith Tube caused the station to be evacuated.
The bus station was also closed as firefighters attended but no one was injured.
Virgin Trains said their services were affected by an incident at Wolverton, near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.
British Transport Police (BTP) said a person was hit by a freight train travelling from Southampton to Daventry at 4.09am Friday.
Services in and out of London's Liverpool Street and Waterloo stations are being disrupted by engineering work during the weekend.
And certain Tube lines - including the Northern and Jubilee lines - are closed in parts.
Despite the problems, 64,000 train services will run over the holiday period - around 5,000 more than last Easter.
A total of 10 million people are on the move in the UK this weekend with two million travelling abroad.
Those staying at home endured a damp Good Friday but will be rewarded with bright sunshine by Easter Sunday, forecasters say.
Sky News weather presenter Lucy Verasamy said: "There will be some lovely springtime sunshine but it'll be cooler across Ireland with showers, and the possibility of some occasional hail and thunder.
"Sunday will be beautifully bright, with lots of cheery sunshine making it feel pleasant but feeling chilly early and late. It will also be cooler across the North and West."
