Default Boxing: Calzaghe to get £1.5m Woods offer

Calzaghe to get £1.5m Woods offer

Joe Calzaghe is to be offered £1.5m to move up to light heavyweight and face IBF champion Clinton Woods, according to Woods' promoter Dennis Hobson.

However, Sheffield's Woods must first come through his clash with Jamaica's Glen Johnson on 2 September.

Wales' Calzaghe, the WBO and IBF super middleweight title-holder, is due back in action in October after injury.

"It would be a dereliction of duty for the fight to go begging because of promotional rivalries," said Hobson.

"With us promoting the fight I'll be able to pay Clinton what I know he is worth as a world champion and as the best light heavyweight on the planet."

However, Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren claims he recently offered Woods a "big payday" to face his fighter, but that Woods preferred to fight Johnson for a third time instead.

The 34-year-old Calzaghe, who captured the IBF belt from America's Jeff Lacy in March, was in negotiations to fight Johnson in July but injured his hand in training.

Hobson and Warren are bitter rivals and their relationship was further strained last month when Warren outbid Hobson to stage Woods' clash with Johnson.

Warren teamed up with Johnson's representatives Warrior Boxing to offer $505,000 (£278,000), eclipsing Hobson's bid of $457,000 (£251,000).

Woods, also 34, has drawn with and lost to Johnson in their two previous encounters and will be out for revenge over the Jamaican again at the Bolton Arena.
