Milwaukee's Australian centre Andrew Bogut has a broken hand, dislocated elbow and sprained wrist after a heavy fall in the Bucks' NBA victory over Phoenix, the team said on Sunday.

Bucks officials said they didn't know when Bogut would return, and the injuries put his availability for a potential playoff run in doubt.

Bogut has been released from hospital, where he was taken after the second-quarter incident in Saturday night's contest.

With the Bucks leading, Bogut took a long pass in for a fast break slam dunk.

He hung on the rim afterward, was touched in the back by the Suns' Amare Stoudemire and crashed to the court.

Trying to brace his fall, he wrenched his right elbow.

Bogut, clearly in pain, was helped up by team medical personnel and left the court holding his arm.

Teammate Brandon Jennings said after the game that he saw Bogut's elbow "pop out".

Stoudemire was booed by Bucks fans and called for a foul, although video replays showed he made light contact with the Australian.

"The fans didn't have a clean view of what happened," Stoudemire said. "But I think once they see the replay they'll see that there was nothing intentional."

Jennings said he didn't think Stoudemire was trying to hurt Bogut.

"Amare doesn't seem like that type of person," Jennings said. "I think it was just an accident."

The loss of Bogut could be a serious blow for the Bucks, whose 107-98 victory on Saturday put them sixth in the Eastern Conference and close to clinching a playoff berth.

The Aussie was the number one overall pick in the 2005 draft and is having an outstanding season, averaging 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

Not a fan of the Bucks really but this is going to kill them big time considering he's one of their biggest stars and one of the main keys to winning, and with the playoffs close at hand this don't look too good for them.

Anyway *cough cough* Go LAKERS!
