Default The "Review A Wrestling Match/Show" Thread

    Just Review A Match/Show. I'll begin:

Kaval vs David Hart Smith FCW 12/03/08

We are told that the backstory is the FCW President has came up with an elite idea - A championship tournament. Kaval Vs. DH Smith is one of the matches. The match begins with alot of holds and technical wrestling. The commentators are building them both up as they have the same style of wrestling. At the start of the match, Kaval has Smith in an arm lock, The way DH counters this is by dropping to his back in a bridge, getting back to his feet & turning Kaval around. It looked pretty cool. Alot of this match features technical wrestling and classic wrestling moves (Halfway through we see some Double dropkicks from Kaval followed by a buzzsaw kick). The announcers (Josh Matthews) tried to play on the fact David Hart Smith is taller and weighs more. Kaval combats that by continuing to aim for Smiths knees. Near the end we see Kaval lock the crucifix on DH Smith, Smith however gets to the ropes. That really looks like an impressive finisher - If it was applied whilst on the ground. Alot of the action featured in this match was good solid wrestling. The finish occurred when DH Smith gets a near pin, TJ Wilson (Tyson Kidd) climbs up on the ropes and distracts DH. Once DH turns around, he is met with a running kick which throws him into the ropes & onto the floor. Kaval picks DH up and slams him & rushes to the top rope where he connects with Warrior's Way (Basically jumping on his opponents chest with his feet). That looked brutal. Kaval gets the pin. Overall this was an good match for FCW, but the ending could have been better; It would have been better for them to have ended this match because of the wrestling moves, not because of a distraction.

Edge and Sheamus vs John Cena and Evan Bourne (WWE RAW 31/5/10)

We were told that Orton (Who had been took out of the match because he'd been hit with a door) was not able to make it to the ring so Cena had to pick another partner. Evan Bourne! This made perfect sense. I actually like evan bourne because he has amazing moves and is uber-talented. His performance in the match was great. I don't think he's going to remain in the WWEs main event scene, but it was nice to see him up there with the likes of Cena and Sheamus. The way the match was shown and played on by the announcers was that Sheamus and Edge were attacking Bourne and that Evan was so tired out that he needed to tag Cena to save his team from losing. This is why I say he won't stay around. The WWE fans really got behind Bourne which was great to see. It seemed to me whilst watching this match that WWE are trying to keep Edge as the main heel on Raw now Tista has gone because the beating Cena made was mostly to Sheamus. As soon as Cena got tagged in, Cena went crazy at Sheamus however the momentum changed quickly as Sheamus slammed Cena. However, this is changed quickly as Sheamus missed the boot and FUs Sheamus. Air-Bourne to Sheamus! Evan Bourne pins Sheamus after the Air-Bourne after 9 minutes. Great match, Great Main Event & Great storyline (Even if it could only be for 1 night).

WWE Raw - 5th January 2004 - Rene Dupree vs. Spike Dudley

The backstory for this match was shown prior to this match. La Resistance was fighting the Dudleyz but unfortunately, things got a bit out of control. Spike ended up being slammed through the edge of a table - His head potentially being sliced open. Spike spent several months out of action and returned on this show to battle Rene in what would be a grudge match. I think this shows good booking by WWE because at least they are remembering these incidents. The announcers, Jim Ross and Coach, explain how Spike has been off for months and how his recovery has been a lengthy one. The only complaint regarding the commentary is that they spend more time discussing football.

Spike starts off by trying to punch Rene and try and get some retribution. Rene takes some control for most of the match which I found odd considering Spike is supposed to be angry and pissed off and raging. I appreciate Rene's talent and tbh La Reisistance is a faction which WWE could use now. These guys were a genuinely annoying faction who you wanted to see get beat up because they preclaimed how the French were superior. They could be genuine contenders for the Hart Dynasty's tag belts.

The end of this match occured when Rene lifts Spike up; Spike riggles down Rene's back and pushes him over causing a pin situation. Spike rushes away from ringisde and celebrates with Bubba & D-Von. Coach complains by saying that Spike pulled Rene's tights. After the match, Ric Flair & Batista appear and attack Bubba and D-Von. I was slightly surprised by the reaction that came from Spike - Because he's supposed to be this angry pissed off guy who nearly had his career ended.

Overall, I'd say this match was a 2* match.

    Your Turn.

WWE Vintage Collection - The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Red Rooster - February 11th, 1989.

The match begins with Brawler stomping Rooster continuously. The announcers put over Brooklyn as a monster who was created by Heenan. Brawler dominates Rooster throughout this match & there is a clear point where Brawler pokes Rooster's eye right infront of the referee; Yet the ref doesn't do anything.. After that slight baffling move, Rooster gets tossed into the corner. Rooster does a sunset flip and gets the pin. I thought that this was a slightly lame ending to what has been a match that never really got starting. The commentators had alot of praise for Brawler and this looked like a time where he was getting pushed and where he was actually being taken seriously.

WWE Championship - Chris Jericho vs. John Cena - WWE Survivor Series 2008

The basic backstory for this match is that John Cena (who was injured months earlier) returned and set his eyes on the World Heavyweight championship. Cena had injured his neck and Jericho worked on Cena's neck for most of the match, using a variety of moves designed to hurt the neck. The end of this match came when Cena locked in an STF - Jericho kicks Cena to escape the move. Jericho rolls Cena up - And gets a two count. Cena then delivers a FU to Jericho. Cena gets the three count.

Overall, I liked the match and liked the entire "Cena returns" storyline. The outcome was predictable but at least Jericho got some credibility in by working on the neck and for being in control for 80% of the match but Cena suddenly had a burst of strength towards the end - Another one of "SuperCena's" victories.

WWE No Way Out 2008 - Ric Flair vs. Mr. Kennedy... Kennedy

Prior to the match, Ken appeared and told us (via his microphone on the entrance) that he was going to end Flair's career. The announcers yet again tease us regarding "Whether it's the last time Ric would wrestle". Kennedy begins the match by knocking Flair over then "styling and profiling". Flair then chops Kennedy and "shows Kennedy how to style & profile".

Flair clearly has an injured knee, which Kennedy focuses on at the start of the bout. Kennedy uses several moves (Like A figure four leg lock around the ring post, along with a normal figure four in the ring). Whilst Kennedy has the figure 4 locked in, Jim Ross teases the irony of Ric Flair losing his final match to his "favourite" move. Kennedy spent most of the match dominating Flair.

A rather gruesome moment occurs when Flair is pushed into the ropes and Kennedy rushes over to try and roll him up for a pinfall. However, Kennedy grabs Flair's tights to get some extra leverage, but unfortunately for everyone, Ric's pants fall down revealing his private areas. The crowd suddenly groan and the match continues for seconds until Ric notices and finally combobulates himself.

The finish happens when Ric kicks out of a pin attempt. Ric then locks the figure four on Kennedy. Moments later, the pressure is too much for Kennedy as he taps out. After the match, Flair announces himself as the winner and claims that he will never retire. Almost everyone could see that Flair would eventually retire at WrestleMania, but it was a good moment.

I thought this match potentially could be a "passing of the torch" contest in which, Yeah, Kennedy lost but he still looked impressive and dominated Flair, who is a legend. Ken looked impressive and the announcers put him over perfectly.

WWE No Way Out 2008 - John Cena vs. Randy Orton - WWE Championship

The basic backstory for this match is that John Cena returned at the Royal Rumble event and won a championship opportunity. Cena insists that he doesn't want a match at WrestleMania, but wishes to cash his match in at the No Way Out PPV. Orton accepts and this match is scheduled for No Way Out.

The two exchange moves during the opening minutes, and Cena tries to get a pinfall off several moves (An elbow being one.. Oh dear). Whilst Orton was dominating Cena, John received a sudden burst of energy and tried to FU Orton; However, Orton countered and delivered an uppercut to Cena. In a random exciting moment, The crowd jumped to their feet only to sit back down as Orton made the pace of the match slower by dominating Cena again with a variety of moves (This time focusing on the right leg of Cena).

The action spills to the outside as Cena and Orton exchange punches out at the bottom of the ramp. The referee counts and gets to a 9 & 3/4 count but Cena and Orton both run and jump in, just in time. The fans stood up as the referee reached 9 because it was clearly seen that potentially the match could have ended right there with both Cena and Orton looking as though they weren't getting back in the ring. Cena and Orton stare at eachother as they rethink their strategy's. Both Cena and Orton battle and the pace of the match again slows down. The audience begin to entertain themselves with "CENA SUCKS" chants.

The action picks up again as Cena grabs Orton's leg and places him in a STF. Orton struggles but soon gets out of the move. Orton rushes to the outside and tells the referee to "count him out". Cena runs out and tells the ref to stop because he knows Randy isn't in any pain. Cena is correct as Orton kicks Cena in the chest and delivers a RKO on the concrete floor. Orton rolls back into the ring. Orton instructs the ref to count to 10 - As Cena lays outside the ring. Cena manages to enter the ring on 9.

The match ends seconds later after Orton slaps the referee. Orton can't believe that Cena managed to enter the ring, so he tries to get himself DQd. He slaps the ref and Mick Chioda calls for the bell to ring and DQs Orton, Thus Orton remaining as champion. Cena goes crazy and FUs Orton and applies the STFU. Randy got himself intentially DQd solely so he can remain champion. The crowd boo as they can't believe that this match was cut short. The match was good until the last 30 seconds.

WWE Vengeance - Night Of Champions - Edge vs. Batista - World Heavyweight Championship

Michael Cole and JBL continuously explain that this is Batista's "last" chance against Edge for the World Championship. JBL tells us that Batista may have been close in recent months, but being close won't get him a world championship. Before the match, Batista hugs Harley Race and shows respect to him.

The match begins very slow. Batista and Edge battle around the ring with Batista taking control first. Batista places Edge into several submission moves and with that, The audience begin to shout "You can't wrestle". The action spills to the outside as Batista gets shoved into the ring post. Cole explains the irony of losing your lost world title match solely because you couldn't make it to the ring. The shoulder gets rammed twice into the ringpost and with that, Batista's bomb, spinebuster and spear will be hard to execute. At this point, I can see Batista winning - Mostly because Cole and JBL are really making people notice how Batista can't do any of his finishing moves.

Batista attempts to samoan-drop Edge but he counters and Batista ends up in a submission. The move looked really good and Batista showed his true power as he broke out of the move. Batista seemed to forget that his shoulder was injurd for a second, as he rammed his shoulder into Edge's stomach whilst Edge was in the corner. The crowd really seem to be getting into this contest as they stand on their feet to witness Batista kick out when unexpected. Seconds later, Batista rolls up Edge and the crowd cheer. Both men then get to their feet and Edge goes to spear Batista, but Batista counters it with a spear. Batista begins to spaz out and places Edge in a batista bomb. However, Edge delivers a low blow to Batista. The bell rings and the decision is that Batista wins but doesn't get the belt.

Or does he... Teddy Long appears and tells Edge that he needs to get back to the ring and restart the match. The crowd pop for the decision. Teddy tells Edge that if he gets DQd again, He's losing the world title.

Edge gets back in the ring and spears Batista. Batista kicks out, which the crowd pop to. Edge picks a chair up and we can faintly hear "shit!" as he places it down. Seconds later, Batista's shoulder gets rammed into the stairs. Edge's attempt at a spear is countered by Batista as he turns it into a powerbomb - On the outside. Batista tries to get Edge back into the ring but he doesn't get himself back into the ring by the time that the count is 10. The bell rings and Batista cries. JBL tells everyone that "Batista had it. He just needed to get him in the ring," which is correct. Batista powerbombs Edge again. Batista poses for the crowd before he returns to the backstage area.

WWE Summerslam 2007 - John Morrison vs. CM Punk - ECW World Heavyweight Championship

Oh, How I miss the times of cocky arrogant Johnny Nitro. Now-a-days he's John Cena's "friend" on RAW who currently roams WWE without a good storyline and currently WWE is wasting his talent. Tazz compliments CM Punk by claiming that he could have "gone" with the old ECW origionals back in the ECW day. Punk seems to take dominion at the start of this match - He delivered a lovely dropkick to Morrison after a few minutes. Morrison delivered a back/neckbreaker through the ropes which looked pretty sick until Punk fell and got tangled in the ropes. From thereforwards, Morrison takes control and places Punk in a variety of moves, mostly of a submission nature. Joey Styles gets very excited as Morrison attempts to pin Punk. Punk delivers a lovely inziguri to Morrison.

At the conclusion of this match, CM Punk attempts to huricanrana but Morrison counters by hanging onto the ropes and remaining ontop of the ropes. Morrison then pins Punk - His feet being on the ropes to assist him.

WWE Summerslam 2007 - John Cena vs. Randy Orton - WWE Championship

The pair lock up and go back and forward for the first few moments. The fans boo Cena and cheer Orton. Jim Ross plays up how Cena was dropped on the chair at SNME. Cena took a sick bump onto the RAW announce table. Moments later, Randy applies a sleeper on Cena and John fades away. Orton also delivers a dropkick to Cena and attempts to pin him. It was a lovely dropkick move and the announcers play up how strange it would have been for Orton to win the WWE belt off a dropkick. Orton applies the sleeper/headlock more.

The audience scream "Let's Go Orton" as Randy locks Cena in a sleeper. Orton places himself on the back of Cena, Locking his legs around Cena's stomach - Which sets him up to be thrown into the ropes by Cena. Cena begins to fight back and punch, He gains momentum and attempts a You Can't See Me? & he connects. Orton gets shoved into an FU but he jumps out of it and somehow gets himself into a position where he can hit an inverted backbreaker on John. Orton then moves Cena's legs on the ropes and Orton does a DDT to Cena whilst his legs are on the ropes.

Cena kicks out and Orton shows no emotion. The announcers ask why this is and Lawler says that he truly can't show any emotions which also plays up the viper character. Orton gets into a position to execute a RKO. He attempts but Cena throws him into the ropes and as he charges at Orton, Randy lowers the ropes so Cena enters the outside area. Once Orton exits the ring, Cena gets thrown into the steps.

Towards the conclusion of the match, We receive alot of very good spots in the space of minutes. To close the match, Orton attempts to RKO Cena but John counters it by throwing Orton to the floor and he puts a STF on him. Randy tries to get to the ropes and does so. Cena then releases the grip. Cena walks towards Randy but Orton RKO's him. Randy appears to be hurt - His left knee. Randy covers Cena but he kicks out. Orton walks over to Cena and lifts him up, but Cena picks Orton up and puts him in a FU. Cena covers Orton and pins him for the 3 count.

WWE Unforgiven - Elijah Burke vs. CM Punk

The match begins very slowly and Punk and Elijah exchange submission moves. The crowd appeared to be in favor to Punk but the crowd are silent for most of the match. Punk delivers a side-russian-legsweep. Punk also gives Elijah some amazing kicks. The action spills to the outside where Punk lands very hard on the mat. Burke also gives Punk several german suplezes.

The conclusion of this match happens when Punk kicks out of Elijah's pin attempt - Elijah stands over Punk and begins hitting him on the head. Punk grabs Elijah's head and rolls him up for the 3. Abit of a lame ending.

WWE Superstars - Edge vs. Kofi Kingston - 23rd April 2009

Todd and JR both claim that this could be the biggest match of Kofi's career so far - If he wins. The match begins normally and Edge and Kofi both exchange moves. Kofi places Edge in a submission move and rolls him up for a 1 count. Kofi shows his athleticism as he leaps onto the top rope and onto Edge in what has been the best move of the match so far. Moments later, Edge elevates Kofi over the top rope but Kofi tangles himself in the ropes - Terrible.

However, Edge delivers a lovely kick to Kofi. Kofi then combated Edge with a lovely standing dropkick. He then gave Edge a punch to the face, but he elevated himself which looked pointless and uneffective. In another awful moment, Kofi tries to hit trouble in paradise, but he doesn't get his left foot high enough so it makes it look like a normal kick - Also, He doesn't even hit Edge (I know this because the camera switched the second after the kick and you could clearly see Edge fell over for nothing). Another dumbfilled moment occured a second after that where the impact of that move apparently made Edge fall out of the ring. Another appaling moment happened when Kofi runs up to the top rope and Edge goes on his knees. Edge looks up (He looks at a little girl who is laughing like crazy) and see's Kofi standing on the top rope. Edge then says something (Sounds like "You said..") and points to the other side of the ring. Kofi then jumps over Edge's back and rolls him up. The whole situation looked awful.

The match ends with a spear to Kofi. No surprise that Edge won. Kofi ended up looking bad compared to Edge. The wrestling wasn't too bad (Except for a few communication issues). Kofi was in control for quite abit of the match so maybe he's better suited for the less dominant positions.

WWE ECW - Kofi Kingston vs. Matt Striker

Prior to the match, Shelton Benjiman appears at ringside and sits with the ECW announcers. Shelton gets asked can he beat Kofi - Obviously, His answer is Yes. The action begins with a weak punch from Striker and Kofi gets dropped on his head as Striker pump handle slams him. Striker covers Kofi and gets a 1 count. Kofi delivers a lovely standing dropkick. He also does a nice legdrop. Kofi gives Matt a trouble in paradise and Matt is down for the 3 count.

TNA Xplosion 7/28/10 - Magnus & Desmond Wolfe vs. Suicide & Amazing Red

Amazing Red & Suicide appear to be wearing matching outfits . As for Wolfe and Chelsea, Some tension can be seen. Magnus and Suicide both begin the match. Magnus puts a nice headlock on Suicide and begins to ground him. Suicide panders to the crowd as Magnus is down - Magnus had a clear chance to attack Suicide. Wolfe and Red enter the ring; Tons of fans are cheering for both.

Wolfe shows off to the crowd. Chelsea looks disgusted but the fans are cheering like crazy. Wolfe and Red exchange exciting moves. Wolfe points his finger and says something to Chelsea but he turns around and Red delivers some really good kicks to Wolfe. Wolfe shouts at Chelsea but Magnus tries to stop him from shouting. Red jumps over the road and takes down Magnus.

After tons of amazing moves and after 6 minutes of great action, Suicide is tagged in. Suicide charges at Wolfe and signals for his finisher. Magnus breaks up the pin attempt but Red gives Magnus a lovely missile dropkick. The action spills outside and Magnus rams Red into the post; Taking him momentarily out of the match. Magnus and wolfe then focus on Suicide as Wolfe does a tower of london on him. Wolfe covers Suicide for the pin. Magnus and Wolfe worked perfect as a team and this match was great.

WWE Hell In A Cell 2009 - John Cena vs. Randy Orton - Hell In A Cell

Fantastic video package before the match. The attitude adjustment on the top of the HIAC in the video package looked like it hurt. This feud has been on-and-off for 2 years and after watching every single match between the two, I've enjoyed 3/4 the matches. This match is regarded as the best Cena/Orton match. The announcers claim that this is Orton's last match against Cena for the Title & if he doesn't gain the belt back, he will need to wait until someone else is the holder.

As soon as the match begins, Orton attempts to open the cage to escape. He can't do this and he gets angry but Cena comes along and returns the action to the ring. Orton dominates Cena during the opening minutes. Cole and Lawler explain that the cage has been reinforced for the match. Cena goes for a quick pin as he FUs Orton but Orton counters the move and gets a two.

The action spills to the outside where you can hear "Randy Orton.. Nobody likes you anymore!" as a little girl shouts at him. Cena gets his head rammed into the steel steps and then Orton stands on his head and stands on his hand. A funny yet non-PG moment occurs when Orton tries to throw the steel steps in the ring but they bounce against the top rope and hit Orton's head. This provokes a massive cheer and "HAHAHA!" from the crowd. Orton throws the steps through the ropes and then puts his middle finger to the fans - Right infront of the camera.

Orton tries to do his DDT while Cena's legs are on the ropes but he did it so Cena's head would land on the steel steps. Cena counters and chucks Orton over the ropes. A near awesome move happens where Cena shows his inner-heel and goes to throw the steel steps at Orton (Who's head is propped up against the cage). Orton moves but that looked pretty sick.

Several times throughout this match, Orton and Cena encounter eachothers finishing moves. Orton taps out to the STF but the referee has been knocked down. Cena helps the ref back up but when he turns around, Orton RKOs him. Cena kicks out and the fans go crazy. This has been a really amazing match. Cena's arms are tied into the ropes. Orton has an evil look on his face.

The conclusion of this match happens when Cena's laying on the floor and Randy punts him violently. Randy then covers Cena for the 3 count. Orton's expression changed the second he punted Cena.

Overall, Orton really played his character well in this match. Orton won his last chance and that sets up another Cena/Orton match for the next PPV. This match was full of tons of finishing moves/spots and I actually really liked it.

WWE Bragging Rights 2009 - John Cena vs. Randy Orton - WWE Championship - 60 Minute Iron Man Match

An amazing backstory for this match tbh. Promos show that this rivalry has lasted for 2 years. I'm exhausted after watching all these matches. These two men have battled in several good matches and this feud culminates after this match. Cena is shown preparing his iron man match. The announcers play on how Orton is evil and has attacked Cena's father and has really put Cena through some tremendous pain. Cena also claims that if he loses against Orton - He will leave RAW. But if Cena wins, Orton won't get a chance to fight for the WWE belt.

Orton enters first and the announcers continue to say "If Cena loses, He's going to Smackdown!" WWE Are really doing a fantastic job at making Smackdown the #2 brand. Cena enters and the crowd actually cheer - Unlike at previous PPVs. This is the first Iron man match that I've watched all the way through. The clock appears and the match begins.

Firstly, Cena and Orton lock up and Cena tackles Orton. Lawler, Cole and Grisham say that it's important to reserve your energy for this contest. Orton and Cena clearly know eachother so well that they can counter every move - Which they do. After 4 minutes, Cena applies the STFU on Orton and Randy taps out quickly - Most likely so he can last the rest of the time. That's smart by Orton. Between falls, The wrestlers are allowed 30 seconds to relax.

Cena and Orton begin fighting and suddenly Orton gives Cena a scoop slam. Orton continues to glance at the clock. Orton begins to pummel Cena. Orton keeps the match basic and simple - By applying a headlock on Cena and placing himself so he can see the clock. After a minute, Cena shows amazing strength by getting out. Cena goes to the top rope. Cole almost wets his pants by saying "Could Cena go up 2-0?". Cena points to the crowd and tells them that he's going for a 5-knuckle-shuffle.. But RKO By Orton! Orton covers Cena and gets the pin. 1-1.

Even though both wrestlers have 30 seconds to relax, Cena still doesn't get himself together. Orton runs at Cena and pushes him off the ropes and into the barricade at ringside. The action is focused on the ringside area now as Orton bangs Cena's head into the steel steps. Orton's eye turn evil as he undresses the announce table. He picks up a monitor and bashes Cena across the head. Orton hits Cena with a microphone. The WWE management have decided to stop the clock whilst they wipe the blood away from Cena.. But John goes crazy and has snapped. Cena hits Orton and throws him over the ropes. Orton gets the upper hand and throws Cena into the steps where Cena's head bounces off brutally. Blood is dripping down Cena's head but he still kicks out. The announcers play up the fact that Cena has 45 minutes left.

The crowd chant along with Cena in a "You can't see me!" chant. Cena connects with the FU.. Or did he? It appears at second look that Orton hit a RKO. Orton's hand is over Cena but Cena's hand is over Orton. The ref counts and it appears that they each get a fall - In what appears to be a double pinfall. The score is now 2-2.

In what is the best move of this match so far, Cena FUs Orton off the top rope. He pins Orton - 3-2 to Cena. All of a sudden, Rhodes & DiBiase run into the ring and beat up Cena. DiBiase hits "Dream Street" on Cena and Rhodes drags Orton's lifeless body onto Cena. The ref counts and the match is now 3-3. Kofi Kingston runs in with a chair and he runs after Legacy. They begin to wrestle up the ramp. In what is an absolutely crazy matter of minutes. Cena gets chucked into the electrical power base and that sets off fireworks that are on the stage. Then Cena gets thrown through the setting - A massive explosion engulfs the area. Orton turns Cena over and covers him for the pin - Orton leads at 4-3 with 34 minutes left. Orton walks over to the power guy. He pushes several of the buttons which cause explosions on the stage. Holy shit. Orton is going to blow up Cena. Firstly, He whacks a steel chair into Cena's head. He then drags Cena over to the spot where the explosion will go off. He walks over to the power area where he pushes the button but it won't work. He pushes some other buttons but Cena gets out of the way before he gets blown up. Holy fucking shit.

Orton figures out that Cena didn't get burned and he punches and kicks and basically goes insane at Cena. Once back at ringside, Orton hits Cena with some steel steps which bounce off the head of Cena. He covers Cena who kicks out. Orton stands over Cena and bends over Cena but John rolls up Orton and gets the pinfall. Currently, The scores are drawed at 4-4. Orton doesn't care about the 30 second interval as he goes crazy but eventually is fulled off by Mike Chioda.
