The son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has been charged in connection with the attack on a Royal convoy of cars during a student fees riot, a court heard on Friday.

Charlie Gilmour, a student at Cambridge University, is accused of violent disorder during the disturbance in Regent Street, central London, on December 9 when a car carrying the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall was attacked.

Gilmour allegedly sat on the bonnet of the car carrying royal protection officers which was in the three-car convoy taking the Prince and Duchess to the Royal Variety performance.

He is also alleged to have thrown a rubbish bin at the convoy, hitting a car, but not the one containing the royal couple.

The 21-year-old was among thousands who protested in Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square on December 9 and was photographed hanging from a Union flag on the Cenotaph during the march.

He issued an apology the day after the demonstrations, describing it as a "moment of idiocy", and adding that he did not realise the Whitehall monument commemorated Britain's war dead.

Gilmour's biological father is the poet and playwright Heathcote Williams but he was adopted by the rock star when his mother, writer and journalist Polly Samson, remarried.

The case was adjourned to the same court on March 25.
