A 13-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the street.

The youngster suffered a single knife wound to his back in the attack in which a Rottweiler dog suffered fatal stab wounds.

The youth remains in hospital where his condition is described as "stable".

Police were called to Cherry Lane, Sale, Greater Manchester, after residents raised the alarm.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts of Greater Manchester Police said: "I can understand that this incident will have caused alarm in the community, as incidents like this are rare.

"While we are continuing to ask that anyone with information contacts us, the wider community in the area should not be concerned about their own safety."
