Default 10 Players Still Available At The NHL Trade Deadline

Despite the pre-deadline flurry of activity, there are still names out there to be had.

The way things are going there may be nobody left to trade on Deadline Day.

In fact, the big deal of the day could be the Atlanta Thrashers dealing its seventh pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft to the Nashville Predators for a ninth pick in 2020.

Teams have been addressing its needs by trading players and draft picks at breakneck speed, but you get the feeling the dealing won't come to a complete halt leading up to Feb. 28.

Here are some players, listed alphabetically, who could move at the deadline:

JASON ARNOTT, C, NEW JERSEY DEVILS

    As of 2/23/11: 60 GP, 13 G, 11 A

The veteran pivot was hoping a return to New Jersey would be just the formula for winning a second Stanley Cup. Arnott helped the Devils win the prize in 1999-2000, but we all know, despite a recent surge under new/old coach Jacques Lemaire, the Devils aren't going anywhere this year. Arnott, 36, could offer size, strength and scoring depth for a contender. If the Devils feel they can make the playoffs, the may elect to hang on to Arnott. But given the fact they need draft choices, GM Lou Lamoriello may have to sacrifice a bit of success this year to protect the future.

TY CONKLIN, G, ST. LOUIS BLUES

    As of 2/23/11: 19 GP, 7-5, 3.11 GAA

With a number of contenders looking for depth between the pipes, some may be inclined to look Conklin's way. However, the fact that Halak's hand injury might not be healed by time the trade deadline passes could mean the Blues will be forced to take Conklin off the table and keep him for the remainder of the season.

    ALES HEMSKEY, RW, EDMONTON OILERS

    As of 2/23/11: 43 GP, 13 G, 27 A

With the Oilers going hard on a youth movement, it wouldn't be surprising to see the club move Hemskey. Despite his considerable skill, he has never really developed into a consistent frontline player. Perhaps a change of scenery would entice him to take his game to the next level. Only 27, Hemskey has the potential to be a top-10 scorer in the NHL.

    ALEX KOVALEV, RW, OTTAWA SENATORS

    As of 2/23/11: 53 GP, 14 G, 13 A

The marriage between Kovalev and the Senators has not been a good one. Known as an enigmatic player through his long career, Kovalev has been even more so in Ottawa who signed him to a two-year, $10 million contract hoping he'd be a suitable replacement for the departed Dany Heatley. Although he has been more productive as the trade deadline draws nearer, you can never really be sure if he'll show up to play and use his undeniable skill, or just go through the motions. Too often it is the latter. Kovalev turned 38 on Feb. 24.

    DUSTIN PENNER, LW, EDMONTON OILERS

    As of 2/23/11: 59 GP, 20 G, 17 A

Penner is what he is; a big, smooth skating winger with good hands and a nose for the net, but a player who doesn't use his size. That really seems to rankle the Oilers coaching staff who would like to see the 6'4, 245-pounder be more physical. Penner, 28, had a career-high 32 goals last season and was on pace to come close to that again this year. He helped the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2006-07 and has another year at $4.25 million remaining on his contract.

    CHRIS PHILLIPS, D, OTTAWA SENATORS

    As of 2/23/11: 59 GP, 4 A, minus-26

Prior to this season Phillips was regarded as a reliable defenceman capable of chipping in with a bit of offence. Even last season the 32-year-old matched a career-high with eight goals to go with 24 points. This year, like a number of his teammates, Phillips has been firing blanks. He was also a defensive liability. However, there may be a contending team that believes in a new environment, Phillips would find his game.

    JONI PITKANEN, D, CAROLINA HURRICANES

    As of 2/23/11: 52 GP, 2 G, 24 A

It's not that GM Jim Rutherford wants to move Pitkanen, but with so many teams in need of a puck-moving defenceman, the price appears to be going up and will be very high come deadline day. The Hurricanes have been decidedly inconsistent this year and if Rutherford is not convinced his team has a chance to go deep into the playoffs, he may be inclined to stock up for next year.

    BRAD RICHARDS, C, DALLAS STARS

    As of 2/23/11: 56 GP, 24 G, 39 A

This is one of the more complicated situations as the deadline approaches. For starters, Richards is the Stars best player. However, he is slated to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and could leave the team and the Stars would get nothing in return. Throw the fact the team is looking for new owners plus the reality that Richards is out with a concussion, and what you get is a very cloudy picture. It has been reported Richards would like to remain with the Stars, but can GM Joe Nieuwendyk take the chance he'll leave next summer? Stay tuned.

    CORY STILLMAN, LW, FLORIDA PANTHERS

    As of 2/23/11: 43 GP, 7 G, 16 A

A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes, the 37-year-old Stillman could be productive adding supplementary scoring for a contender concerned about its lack of offence. A great heads-up performer, Stillman is generally productive playing with the man advantage, though that has not been the case this season.

    TOMAS VOKOUN, G, FLORIDA PANTHERS

    As of 2/23/11: 45 GP, 19-21, 2.61 GAA

The Panthers have indicated they'd like to re-sign the veteran stopper, but can an organization that is rebuilding with precious little scoring up front sit back and allow a top-rate goaltender to walk away next summer and get nothing in return? Not a chance. The 34-year-old native of the Czech Republic could be the final piece of the puzzle for a contending team with goaltending concerns. Say Detroit? Washington? San Jose?

I'm a big Stars fan and think Brad Richards is a total bad ass. Tom Hicks has completely ruined the Dallas franchise with his b.s. and has left them unable to put a top quality team on the ice. I wish Dallas had traded Brad Richards had been traded as I think he's gone for sure in the offseason. I'd much rather they get something for him now.

Ive been struggling to keep up to date with things this season but has Richards being out with concussion coincided with when Stas started faltering? If so depending what they got back, wouldn't it be a risk to play off hopes to trade him?

his concussion was more recent, i think the slump was already underway, that being said it appears he is close to being able to skate so there is a chance he could be flipped before tomorrow
