Unopened letters were accidentally sent for recycling instead of being forwarded to the international star.
Heaps of fan mail meant for country crooner Taylor Swift have gone astray.
"Hundreds" of adoring letters from fans were recently found in a Nashville-area public recycling bin.
WKRN TV said Tennessee resident Kylee Francescan found the envelopes when she was dropping off old newspapers.
"There were hundreds of letters written to Taylor Swift," Francescan said. "I didn't know if they were stolen, or if somebody discarded them, so I threw them in a box, and I was like 'somebody needs to let Taylor know'."
Some of the mail had been opened, but some letters were still sealed up.
It turns out the correspondence was meant for a local post office box where Swift's assistants regularly collect her mail.
The 23-year-old pop star's spokeswoman, Paula Erickson, told WKRN a few unopened letters must have accidentally been added to a pile of open mail, which is usually recycled after being opened and read.
"The only explanation for any letters being unopened would be that a small batch of mail that was supposed to be delivered to Taylor was accidentally put with letters headed for the recycling centre," Ms Erickson said.
She added that Swift's team intended to reclaim the letters.
Swift has made headlines recently for her frequent break-ups, and recently took aim at comediennes Amy Pohler and Tina Fey for joking about her dating behaviour during the Golden Globe Awards.
"There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women," Swift told Vanity Fair magazine.
