A 24-year-old woman, Rachael Mattice, who went “missing” from a New York campsite on June 23rd recently found her way back home on July 6 after supposedly being blindfolded, abducted, beaten and neglected in a small shed, according to The Daily Beast.

Numerous vigils were held in honor of Rachael to spread awareness about her abduction…and even her favorite singer Shania Twain posted on Twitter to help out.

After speaking to Rachael after her sudden return, though, police are starting to think her “abduction” was her own doing…

When the police spoke to Rachael, she told them that her abductor blindfolded her and drove her back to a shed within two blocks of her family’s home in Johnstown, NY, but a witness is saying different.

A witness came forward on July 18 and said he picked up Rachael from a trailhead near her campsite and drove her to a “a seasonal camp in Canada Lake, New York,” which happened to be a camp that belonged to her Aunt’s boyfriend.

“The camp itself belongs to the boyfriend of Rachael’s aunt,” Troop G commander William Keeler told reporters. “It was a place she frequented, and that she knows well.”

Police also said there are no leads with the abductor’s description (50-60s white bearded male who smelled like cigarettes), and that electronic evidence and medical findings are not consistent with Rachael’s story.

While Mattice was “missing,” police say they had 400 leads in the case, which racked up a six-figure cost during her search.

While Rachael is sticking to her original story, police are certain she is lying. They are currently trying to figure out what she was doing during the two weeks she was “missing.”

Rachael currently faces a $1,000 fine or up to a year in prison.
