The Friday before SummerSlam, 4 promotions will come together to throw a super-show in Toronto. Ring of Honor announced yesterday that August 9th they will be in Toronto along with stars from NJPW, CMLL, and the NWA for Summer Supercard from the Mattamy Athletic Center.

“Stars from ROH, NJPW, CMLL and the NWA are joining forces to present Summer Supercard at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre on Aug. 9,” an ROH press release fro the event reads. “Riding a wave of momentum from last month’s historic G1 Supercard, Summer Supercard promises to be a sizzling spectacular that pro wrestling fans will not want to miss.”

“Summer Summercard will feature the greatest wrestlers from the US, Japan and Mexico competing for championships and in dream matches.”


Tickets for Summer Supercard go on-sale for Honor Club subscribers next Wednesday and the following Friday to the general public.
The NWA Championship has a storied history in the very building the Summer Supercard will emanate from. The old Maple Leaf Gardens has been renovated considerably now that it is the Mattamy Athletic Center, however.

In 1961, Bruno Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers for the NWA title in Toronto but refused to accept the championship as Rogers had wrestled with an injury.

In 1963, Lou Thesz won the title from Buddy Rogers, however numerous NWA territories refused to recognize the victory as the match was not contested under best 2-of-3 rules (in actuality several promoters just wanted to leave the NWA at the time). Rogers then became the first WWWF Champion shortly after.
