Curry got his nickname from taming a wild steer on the streets of Hartford CT. Curry's earliest match was in 1933 against Tarzan Taylor in Boston under promoter Paul Bowser. Curry was a huge draw in Texas and in Detroit. Texas promoter Norman Clark had said that Curry was the most consistent draw that he ever had. Curry was a tough and as a teenager worked the carnival circuits taking on all comers. In Texas Curry feuded with Danny McShain, Duke Keomuka, & Pepper Gomez. He held the Texas Brass Knuckles title because it was specifically created for him. Fellow wrestler Jim Lancaster had said that when Curry came into Detroit he would be a bigger draw than The Sheik.
