New Japan Pro Wrestling's Mercedes Moné will be out of action indefinitely after undergoing surgery on her ankle.

At NJPW Resurgence, Moné lost to Willow Nightingale in the finals of a one-night tournament to crown the first NJPW Strong Women's Champion. Moné had originally been scheduled to win the match and the title before an injury during the match forced the ex-Superstar to call an audible. During the match, Moné suffered an ankle injury when diving on Nightingale who was outside of the ring. The former IWGP Women's Champion had signed a new long-term contract with New Japan prior to the match. Moné was seen being helped to the back by ringside attendants after the match.

It was unclear at the time of her injury whether Mercedes Moné had suffered a broken ankle which would require surgery or just a heavy sprain. Taking to her Instagram Stories this week, Moné seemingly answered the question when she posted an image from a sofa with her right leg in a cast. She also wrote, "Day 6 recovery" presumably from after a surgery on her ankle.

This injury has scuppered rumored plans for Moné to be part of the upcoming AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door crossover event. It has been reported that Moné and AEW CEO Tony Khan were in talks as early as January, with unconfirmed rumors stating she would have faced the Outcasts' Saraya at the event. The pair certainly have history, as it was during a match between the two in December 2017 that Saraya would suffer an injury that would result in the British wrestler missing nearly five years of action.
