Over two-dozen Superstars know what it feels like to cash in Money in the Bank, but what WWE initially planned for the briefcase was much different.

The match-type, supposedly the idea of Chris Jericho, debuted at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, with Edge becoming the first person to hold the coveted briefcase. After successfully defending his contract against Matt Hardy during the October 3, 2005, episode of Raw, Edge would cash in on John Cena at New Year's Revolution 2006 to win his first of eleven WWE World Championships. Edge's 280-day wait remains the longest time a male Superstar has waited to cash in.

Edge's cash-in would establish the trend for cash-in attempts, where the holder of the briefcase will choose to have their title match when the champion is at their weakest. Only a handful of wrestlers (the first of which being RVD) have announced their title match in advance. On Twitter this week, former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz revealed that originally, the plan was for the title match to be announced in advance. It was only when somebody questioned why a heel wouldn't choose a time when the champion is hurt to cash in that things changed.

Last weekend, Damian Priest and IYO SKY added their names to the list of people to hold the coveted Money in the Bank briefcase. Both have attempted to cash in already, with Priest trying at the Money in the Bank Premium Live Event, while SKY took her shot on SmackDown. Since neither title match officially began, both Priest and SKY remain Mr and Miss Money in the Bank respectively.
