The 7/29 edition of RAW IS UNAMERICAN aired live from the legendary Greensboro Coliseum. It was yet another strong show. What a difference a couple of weeks can make! They've really put their heads together and produced some good material out of this Eric Bischoff angle. They've created a situation where fans want to tune in to see what's going to happen next. It's the type of episodic TV that made RAW a hit a few years ago. They may be overdoing it a little on the shock value material, though. I know that's a judgment call, and a percentage of the fans like such material, but overdoing it can create a situation where there's a constant need to top the prior shock, which in the long run leads to too much hot-shotting.
The show opened with highlights from last week of the Shawn Michaels and Triple H angle, with HHH pedigreeing the Heartbreak Kid.
Bischoff came down to the ring. He said that he warned Stephanie McMahon when she stole Brock Lesnar that he would knock her out. And when he knocks someone out, they don't get back up, said the guy who once knocked Vince McMahon out, but who is now working for him. So Eric introduced his newest acquisitions from Smackdown, the Unamericans, otherwise known as Christian, Lance Storm, and Test. The Canadians came out, with Test holding an American flag upside down. Storm got on the mic and accused Americans of worshipping celebrities. He got pretty hardcore, calling Elvis a fat, bloated drug addict who died on the toilet, Marilyn Monroe a manic-depressive who OD'ed on sleeping pills, and Babe Ruth a raging alcoholic who slept with 30 prostitutes. He added that John Wayne became a prostitute when his family sold his image to a beer company. Christian stated that the U.S. is as cold as Ted Williams' frozen corpse. I guess this all proves that Paul Heyman wasn't absent from the production meetings this week. Christian continued, asserting that most American kids know all of Britney Spears' songs but know nothing about the Bill of Rights. Well, what can I say? We've been dumbing our schools down since the 1960's. And shows like Road Rules and The Real World wouldn't be nearly as entertaining if we hadn't dumbed those kids down. Storm added that kids today do little besides suck down Big Macs and cruise the net for porn. He concluded by praising Bischoff as one American who has accomplished something. At this point, HBK came out to the ramp top. He told Bischoff that he wants to get his hands on HHH. He didn't know whether HHH had the night off, was stuck in traffic, or maybe shot himself in the head to keep from having to listen to those pinheads in the ring. Bischoff chimed in that when HHH arrives, he'll address HBK's challenge face to face. Test told HBK to take a hike. HBK said the Canucks are just upset that he slapped around their Canadian hero Bret Hart a few years ago. Montreal is so flexible for providing cheap shot material! HBK continued, saying if Bischoff doesn't bring HHH to him, he'll track HHH down and bring Bischoff his remains afterward. Storm called HBK a typical selfish American with no respect for anyone but himself, and vowed that he and his allies would make a distinctly Unamerican impact before the night's end.
Bischoff gave Eddie Guerrero a pep talk backstage. He was interrupted by a crew guy who said a lady in a limousine had arrived and that she wanted to see Bischoff. Bischoff said she's no lady, she's Stephanie McMahon. He told the crew guy to tell that "bitch" to sit tight. He promised to finish things off once and for all.
Booker T beat Eddie Guerrero in 5:26. Booker started with some kicks. Both blocked suplexes before Guerrero hit one. Guerrero began working on Booker's back, which was sold as being still weak. He scored some twos on Booker. Booker hit some chops. Guerrero exposed the turnbuckle but ended up being to one to crash into the steel. Booker won with a scissor kick and did a spinaroonie afterward.
Bischoff arrogantly walked out to the limo and jerked open the door, only to find that Fabulous Moolah & Mae Young were there instead of Stephanie. Bischoff stormed off in disgust.
HBK was looking all over backstage for HHH. He entered Booker & Goldust's locker room. Booker confronted him, acting like HBK got what he deserved last week when he got pedigreed in the middle of the ring. HBK said his problems with Booker were just business, but his problems with HHH are personal. After HBK left, Booker said he might give HBK a personal invitation to an ass whuppin'. Goldust said, "I can dig that, sucka!" followed by a hisssssssss!
Trish Stratus & Bubba Ray Dudley defeated Molly Holly & Big Show in 4:16. This was fought under the new inter-gender rules. As a conservative kind of guy, I'm not too crazy about the guys wrestling the gals, but I guess it puts Bischoff over as a heel. Show was substituting for William Regal, whom Molly announced as having a muscle pull. She immediately attacked Trish, but Trish made a comeback. Show tried to drop an elbow on Trish, but missed. Show pounded Bubba, who bumped and sold like crazy. Molly came in. Bubba hip tossed her and tagged Trish in. Trish hit a huracanrana but Show put her down with a cheap shot. Show saved Molly from taking a wazzup. Molly did a superplex on Trish. Outside the ring, Bubba clocked Show with the stairs. Molly went for a somersault splash but landed on her ass when Trish moved. Trish then lariated Molly off Bubba's shoulders for the pin. Afterward, Show caught Bubba with a chokeslam and shoved Trish down hard. Show was going to put Bubba through a table, but Trish came at him with a chair, so he decided to put her through instead. Bubba made the save with a chairshot, rescuing Trish.
HBK was still looking for HHH. He encountered Big Show, who complained about Bubba hitting him with the chair. HBK dismissed it as not being a big deal since finding HHH was more important. Show mumbled some threatening words towards HHH after he left.
Ric Flair talked with Jeff Hardy. He told Jeff he doesn't need to go out there and kill himself in every match just to try and boost ratings. Bischoff arrived and said he cares about Jeff's health, calling him the future of RAW, but then sort of hinted that he was hoping for violence in Jeff's upcoming match. Flair, who was scheduled to face Rock in the main event, said he learned one thing from Bischoff. That was to save big announcements for the end of the show to boost ratings. Flair said he would be making a major announcement after his match. At this point, Mae Young came up and tried to kiss Bischoff. Bischoff fought her off. Moolah said Mae will keep trying to kiss Bischoff until he agrees to let them have some air time to plug Moolah's new book (her biography). Bischoff yelled at Mae, calling her an old bag, among other things.
Jeff Hardy beat Bradshaw to win the Hardcore Title in 4:35. Bradshaw sent Jeff careening into the stairs. They fought with garbage cans. Bradshaw brought the stairs in the ring and was going to powerbomb Jeff off them, but Jeff reversed it into a backdrop. They used garbage can lids on one another. Jeff got a ladder and both climbed up opposite sides. Jeff knocked Bradshaw off with lid shots and then did the swanton off the ladder. He didn't quite connect, but scored the pin anyway to become the champ. Afterward, Johnny Stomboli (Johnny the Bull) ran in and powerbombed Jeff for a pin and a 24/7 title change. Bradshaw lariated Johnny but Tommy Dreamer came in and hit Bradshaw with a kendo stick. Dreamer then pinned Johnny and escaped through the crowd as the new Hardcore champ
Regal praised the Unamericans for their anti-American tirade. Test asked him about his muscle pull. Regal suddenly remembered he was injured (i.e., the injury was a fake to allow Big Show to fill in for him) and began acting like his leg was in pain. He left, saying he needs a massage. Chris Benoit emerged from a nearby locker room, heading out to the ring for the IC Title shot he earned last week. Christian wished him luck, since he's a fellow Canadian. Benoit said he doesn't need luck, but will win the belt with his own abilities.
Hour two began with Benoit defeating Rob Van Dam in 10:19 to capture the IC Title. RVD started off with some kicks, including a dropkick that looked like it potatoed Benoit. He had a busted lip afterward and looked legit a little bit angry. Maybe quite a bit angry. RVD hit a high plancha. Benoit began working on RVD's shoulder with suplexes and shots into the post. The match was ultra-stiff. RVD began throwing kicks but Benoit stopped him with a leg whip. RVD hit a springboard kick and the rolling thunder. RVD went for the frog splash but Benoit partially rolled clear. That looked like it hurt. Benoit hooked the crossface. RVD made the ropes but Benoit hooked it again. RVD elbowed his way out and tried for a roll-up but Benoit reversed it and scored a pin using the ropes. A good match.
HBK, deciding that HHH wasn't in the building, went out to the parking lot to watch for him. He told a crew guy to wait by the entrance and to send HHH out to him if he sees him. HBK would have had better luck waiting for Godot.
Bischoff brought Moolah & Mae out to the ring. He put over Moolah's book, and told them they have three minutes to deliver an entertaining promo for it. It was a gimmick satire on last week's D-Lo Brown vs. Shawn Stasiak match. Jerry Lawler said Moolah's so old she has an autographed copy of the Bible. Moolah began rambling about her childhood, about her first match in Boston, about Cyndi Lauper being a little bitch, about never losing to Wendi Richter, and other stuff. Bischoff acted bored and kept telling her to hurry up. Moolah & Mae began arguing. Bischoff told Moolah she's about to experience her last chapter, and sent in the Island Boyz once again. This was legitimately very scary, because the Island Boyz are big (relatives of Rikishi) and are a great team, and they proceeded to attack the aged Moolah & Mae. Moolah got sent into the turnbuckles and was squashed in the corner by one of the Islanders. Mae got shoved down hard and then bodyslammed and splashed off the top rope. I guess they're a couple of tough old cookies who've been taking bumps since before most of us were born, but this was very high risk, and probably not worth the risk.
After a commercial break, Moolah & Mae were shown being stretchered out. Bischoff boasted that they made a big splash (get it?) on RAW. He declared that things happen on RAW, and all he has to do is snap his fingers to make something big occur. Pompey said something like that right before Caesar invaded Rome. This brought Undertaker out. He told Bischoff to go ahead and snap his fingers and see what happens. That was hilarious. Christopher Nowinski then arrived. He accused UT of trying to intimidate Mr. Bischoff. Nowinski asked Bischoff to make UT apologize for attacking him last week. Bischoff, however, proved to be a graduate, not of Harvard, but of the Vince McMahon School of Evasive Diplomacy. He ordered a UT vs. Nowinski match so that, you know, Nowinski could get the revenge he so desires. Nowinski, however, didn't have such desires, and he asserted that Bischoff can't push UT around and force him to wrestle. See, if all those dumbed down kids would just watch wrestling, they'd learn about Machiavelli, Metternich, and all those guys. UT said Bischoff can't make him fight, but he'll fight because he wants to fight, which led to.....
UT defeated Nowinski in 1:41. Bischoff got the hell out of there and the bell rang. Nowinski got in a little offense, but otherwise got squashed and pinned after the Last Ride. Afterward, UT was attacked by the Unamericans. Test gave him a big boot to the face. Storm & Christian then went to give UT the "concerto" (Edge & Christian's old double chairshot to the head) but they missed badly and the crowd groaned. To be fair, the concerto is one of the hardest spots to pull off as it can really cause some serious harm if it actually connects. They re-did the spot and it looked better the second time. The American Badass was left laying by the Unamericans.
They replayed the one good concerto after a break. The Unamericans boasted that they still had some unfinished business, with Jim Ross wondering what it could be.
Rock, who got great heat, was interviewed by Jonathan Coachman. Rock said he was tired of being interviewed by sickos like hermaphrodite Kevin Kelly and masturbating Marc Loyd. He claimed that when he does an interview on Smackdown, Loyd goes off in a corner and loses five pounds the hard way. Rock said it's nice to be interviewed by someone like Coach, who is normal other than that one night he spent with the cows. Coach acted innocent, but Rock alleged that Coach comes from a farm in Kansas and that sometimes after a few drinks he, shall we say, spends some time with the farm animals. He accused him of using a microphone on a cow named Bessie. Coach said he only did it that one time, and Rock called him a sick freak and ran him off. I guess this proves WWE won their battle with the PTC. Rock then cut a promo on Brock Lesnar, telling him to just bring it. Finally, he turned his attention to Flair, putting him over very well in Greensboro and calling him a legend. He did a Flair strut in the middle of his closing "smell what the Rock is cookin'" catch phrase.
HHH came out. He cut a promo on HBK, saying he does his fighting in the ring, not in parking lots. He discussed his pedigree last week on HBK. HHH said that after all he's done for HBK over the years, he couldn't believe it when HBK didn't want to be his manager. He claimed that HBK just couldn't give up the spotlight and accept that he (HHH) is the new icon and show stopper. He said HBK is through as a wrestler and a star and that all he has left is his pride, but he warned that that pride can get him hurt. He challenged HBK to either come out and fight, or to put away his pride and accept his secondary role as his manager. At this point, one of the tech guys whispered something to HHH. HHH acted upset, and ran out of the ring and to the back. In the parking lot, he found HBK lying unconscious and covered in blood. A bunch of wrestlers (such as Spike Dudley) and road agents (such as Arn Anderson) were there, but none had seen who did it. There was a broken window on a nearby car, with blood on the head-sized hole in the glass. It all looked pretty hardcore. HHH got concerned when he saw HBK lying there, as if he suddenly had sympathy for his old friend. He began yelling for someone to send for help.
After a break, HBK was stretchered off into an ambulance, still unconscious. Bischoff arrived and thought HHH had been the assailant, and actually was impressed by HHH's ruthless aggression. HHH was furious that Bischoff thought he did it, saying "F*** you!" It got bleeped, but still was pushing the envelope. The angle was well done, as it left open the possibility that several people could theoretically be the assailant (HHH, the Unamericans, Big Show, or Booker & Goldust, or maybe even the late-arriving Chris Jericho).
Rock beat Flair in a non-title match in 7:24. Rock started off with arm drags, followed by Flair doing the same and frustrating Rock, who bailed out. Flair did a "whoooo!" and strutted. Rock actually got some boos, though he also got cheers. Flair hit the chops and punches. Rock blocked a figure four. He put Flair down with the spinebuster and went for the People's Elbow. But Flair blocked it and almost hooked the figure four again. Rock countered it and put Flair in the sharpshooter. Flair escaped with a rake of the eyes and he finally hooked the figure four. Rock made the ropes. They slugged it out and Flair actually won the round. He strutted, to a big pop. But Rock quickly rallied and won with a Rock Bottom. A hot main event, and amazing to see a segment of the crowd booing Rock, though I guess it was expected in Greensboro. Afterward, they shook hands and Flair hoisted Rock's arm in victory. Rock left, leaving Flair alone to make his announcement. Flair began speaking, and seemed to be about to announce his retirement when he was interrupted by Chris Jericho's music. Flair was distracted and Jericho came in from the other side and laid him out with a chairshot. Jericho posed as the show ended with JR putting over what a coup is was for Bischoff to recruit Jericho and the Unamericans.
