The WWE PLE machine continues to roll.

On Monday morning, the company announced that the 2023 WWE Payback event, which aired live on Peacock from the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh broke multiple records including viewership, gate, and merchandise sales.

Viewership for Payback increased by 36% against the 2016 edition of the event, which previously held the record. 12,468 fans attended the event in Pittsburgh for an increase of 13% in the gate -- ahead of the 2016 event and setting the mark for WWE's highest grossing event ever in Pittsburgh.

As for merchandise, sales this year were up 182%, shattering the record previously set for the event in 2017. Finally, WWE announced that the 2023 Payback event was the most socially viewed Payback ever with 146 million social views -- an increase of 44% over the record set in 2020.

This year's Payback event featured Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as the main event. Rollins and Nakamura battled with Rollins injuring his back during the match. In the end, though, Rollins overcame the injury and connected with his Stomp to pin Nakamura and retain his championship.

In the opening match, Becky Lynch defeated Trish Stratus in a Cage Match, ending what was a month's long feud between both women that dated back to the Spring.

WWE legend, John Cena, was the special guest host for this year's Payback and served as the special guest referee for The Miz vs. LA Knight. Cena called the action right down the middle and raised the hand of LA Knight in the end. Cena is expected to be on the next seven episodes of Smackdown.
