Following AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door, Bryan Danielson revealed that he had sustained a fractured forearm during his main event match against NJPW’s Kazuchika Okada. Four months after their headlining clash, Danielson had issued a challenge for a rematch and Okada accepted with one word.

During NJPW’s Power Struggle event, Danielson appeared in a video package, vowing to enact his revenge on the "Rainmaker” by breaking his right arm in a singles contest at Wrestle Kingdom 18. In response, Okada pointed out that he’d be seeking his own revenge for the loss he suffered at Forbidden Door. After Danielson laid down the initial challenge, NJPW confirmed that “The American Dragon” will go one-on-one with Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 18, which will emanate from the Tokyo Dome on January 4, 2024.
