The series has cast Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell in the lead roles of Dunk and Egg, respectively.

Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, it follows two unlikely heroes who wandered Westeros, a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

In April 2023, HBO said it had ordered another Game of Thrones prequel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. The prequel is based on the Dunk & Egg fantasy novellas written by George R.R. Martin.

Chronologically, it is set about 72 years after House of the Dragon and about 100 years before GoT.

Claffey previously appeared in Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters and is in Season 3 of Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla. Sol Ansell began his career in British soap Emmerdale and has appeared in Sky’s The Midwich Cuckoos as well as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The series is written and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Executive producers include Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw.

It will premiere in late 2025.
