View Full Version : Nigel McGuinness Talks ROH PPV's, Rhino, Samoa Joe, More

On June 5th, Wrestling Weekly hosts Doc Young and Les Thatcher were joined by featured guest Nigel McGuinness and ‘Irish’ Pete Doyle who joined Doc and Les for this week’s “Hot Topic”. Wrestling Weekly airs every Tuesday at 8pm Eastern at www.wrestlingweekly.com

They discussed the following:

- Nigel McGuinness wrestling Rhino.

- How his career in pro-wrestling has progressed with Les mentioning McGuinness has wrestled, in addition to ROH, for Pro-Wrestling NOAH in Japan, Italy, Germany.

- Nigel’s multi-year deal with Ring of Honor and ROH on pay-per-view.

- “Politics” in both WWE and TNA.

- McGuinness discusses Ring of Honor, stating “I’m achieving my dream in the wrestling business”.

- Was trained by Robbie Brookside, in addition to Les Thatcher. Robbie had a large collection of “old school” British wrestling tapes, which Nigel McGuinness notes he learned from by watching them.

- Had his ’game face’ on for the Ring of Honor pay-per-view and McGuinness discusses his back and shoulder injuries, both of which he had going into the event, in detail.

- Nigel’s match which aired on VH-1 and Jonny Fairplay’s concussion.

- Bringing an iron to the ring in Ring of Honor and the origins behind it.

- Nigel McGuinness discusses his idols in pro-wrestling and as a fan of WWE, his were “Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Ted DiBiase, Shawn Michaels…Bulldog”.

- Ricky Steamboat, who was impressed by Nigel’s ‘armdrag’ which Les notes was reminiscent of The Dragon’s and McGuiness continues by stating he watched Steamboat’s match against ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage at ‘WrestleMania III’ for hours and practiced the armdrag “again and again“.

- Nigel McGuinness discusses his in-ring style and states that Les referred to him as a “slow-mo highlight reel”. He continues by noting that his style was from watching the old tapes of British wrestling.

- Favourite opponents are Rhino, ‘American Dragon‘ Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels.

- Says Samoa Joe, like Bryan Danielson, brings the “best out of you” and credits some of his improvement to Joe.

- The possibility of a television deal for ROH and how this compares to Ring of Honor on pay-per-view.

- Nigel’s next matches are in Boston (four corners match with Hero, Quackenbush & Castagnoli) and in Philadelphia, where he will wrestle a mystery opponent.

- Davey Richards & the “King of Europe” tournament.
