TelstraClear has completed a $1.2 million upgrade to its cable networks in Wellington and Christchurch that will let it soon offer customers broadband speeds of 25 megabits per second.

The increase, from 10 megabits, has been made possible by the installation of an "advanced provisioning system" supplied by Motorola.

Spokeswoman Jodine Laing says a little more work needs to be done before TelstraClear offers the faster plans. She would not say whether TelstraClear would raise its data caps or review its prices at the same time.

Chief operating officer Luigi Sorbello says the upgrade will improve the reliability and capacity of the network, as well as its speed. TelstraClear has 70,000 cable customers in the two cities. About 45 per cent of them are believed to have signed up for broadband.

After the upgrade, the network will provide faster speeds than can ADSL2+, which Telecom is testing in Auckland and will roll out to major centres by the end of the year.
