An open fist minimizes impact, due to the the fist hole collapsing due to the hit.

An open fist is like a soft punch, which compared to a closed fist, which is quite hard

Yeah an open fist is much better to take to the jaw as a wrestler than a closed one. Guys like the Rock are good at not making contact or making minimal contact, but the only experience I've had is with Indy wrestlers. 'Nuff said.

A closed fist is an actual thing. Bend the point of your fingers as far as possible into your hand, obviously without making a traditional fist.
