Soul singer Aretha Franklin has called off a "homecoming" concert in Detroit, blaming heat exhaustion.

She was due to play in the US city on Sunday evening, but the forecast was for sunshine and highs of 30C (86F).

The 65-year-old said two recent outdoor gigs had been "sweltering and all but overwhelming", and hoped that the Detroit event would be rescheduled.

She could not "tolerate heat in these extremely high numbers and being in concert simultaneously", she added.

Franklin, famous for hits such as I Say a Little Prayer and Respect, had planned to appear at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in the Detroit suburb of Clarkston.

Although the Grammy-winner was born in Memphis, she has lived in Detroit for more than two decades, and it has become her adopted home.

Fans can obtain refunds from the outlet which sold them their tickets.
