TRENTON — During a struggle with police, a city woman arrested for shoplifting yesterday, wriggled out of her shirt to avoid police and went running bare-breasted down the street before being captured.
The free show took place at the corner of East State and North Broad streets, where police responded to the report of a shoplifting in progress inside the Rain-Bow Shop at about 5 p.m.
A witness told police that the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Shaylin B. Phelps, had taken some products from the store without paying.
The officers escorted Phelps back to the store and the manager pointed to a white plastic bag containing stolen goods, including a pair of brown shoes, a white jacket, pants and a pair of sunglasses.
When officers at the scene then advised Phelps that she was under arrest, she pulled away and resisted being handcuffed, police said, and she ran behind the store counter.
During an ensuing struggle, police said Phelps managed to twist her way out of her clothing, then went running from the store topless.
After a brief foot chase, Phelps was caught and subdued in the area of North Warren Street, where she was placed under arrest.
Police said she was then handcuffed and advised to stay face down on the ground to keep herself covered. Arriving Internal Affairs detectives then provided the suspect with a sweater to cover her body.
Phelps was transported to police headquarters and was charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest.
Police said no one was injured during the incident.
