Barberton - A policeman's teenaged son claims he took a loaded gun to school to protect himself from bullies.

The 15-year-old grade 10 pupil from a high school in Barberton, Mpumalanga, was found with a loaded 9mm pistol in his school bag last Friday.

Fellow pupils who saw the gun told teachers and police were called.

The boy allegedly told police that he took the gun to protect himself from bullies from another school, who caught the same bus.

Police asked him to point out the bullies at the other school and warned them to stop bullying him.

Barberton police station commissioner Superintendent Ntombizwe Banda said the boy has appeared in court on charges of the illegal possession of a firearm.

The case was postponed to June 29.

The firearm is licensed and belongs to the boy's grandfather. Banda said police were investigating if the father was fit to own a gun.

The firearm was confiscated by the police and the boy has received counselling.

Having the police telling the bullies to stop will just make it worse.
