Pretoria - It's best not to steal a car when you've been on a binge, because you could just end up passed out in a stolen car in a cemetery - with the police knocking on the car's window.

That's the lesson an intoxicated car thief learnt at the weekend.

Gareth Crocker, spokesperson for the Tracker vehicle recovery company said the Flying Squad had nailed the suspected car thief at the wheel of a stolen vehicle at a cemetery in Mamelodi East.

"The Tracker tracing system led the police to the cemetery. The suspected thief, who was not armed, was very surprised when he was woken up by the cops," said Crocker.

They apparently they had to wait for him to sober up before they could arrest him.

"It appears that he went on a binge somewhere and then decided to steal a car."

Crocker said it wasn't clear why the suspect had decided on the cemetery as a hiding place.

The vehicle had been stolen at a house in Centurion.

"Car thieves often use public parkades at airports, hospitals and shopping centres to hide vehicles to see if they're being followed by the police or a tracking company.

"But a cemetery is a very weird choice. There's usually not enough place to hide so that the thief can watch the car at a safe distance," Crocker said.
