Only a few short weeks separates us from the new stable release of Ubuntu, code name "Gutsy Gibbon". What can we expect? A web site called "Tolero's tech notes" has published an excellent summary of all the new features (http://tech.tolero.org/blog/en/linux/review-ubuntu-710-gutsy-features-changes): "Yes, it has finally happened - CompizFusion is now enabled by default on all supporting platforms in Ubuntu 7.10! Now it is labeled as stable, and is believed to work fine just out of the box, or after a proper driver configuration, which in my case was a simple activation of a checkbox in the 'Restricted Drivers Manager' tool and reboot of the computer. There are three pre-configured levels of special effects settings: 'No effects', 'Normal effects' and 'Extra effects'. You can select one of them at the 'Appearance' dialog in the 'Preferences' group of the 'System' menu. To get additional interface with a much greater tweaking possibilities, you have to install a 'compizconfig-settings-manager' package, which is located in the 'universe' repository." Also covered by the article: screen and graphics card configuration, desktop search, printing changes, Firefox 3.0 alpha, GIMP 2.4, OpenOffice.org 2.3 and new features in Linux kernel 2.6.22.
