The nation won seven of their eight nominations; Jim Broadbent won best actor in The Street, which also won best drama series. Little Britain Abroad won best comedy and Simon Schama's Power of Art: Bernini won the award for best arts programming.
Stephen Fry's The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive won best documentary, and How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? took the award for best non-scripted entertainment.
British comedian Victoria Wood was nominated for her role in drama Housewife, 49 - but the award went to Muriel Robin from France.
Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore received an honorary award for his work in broadcasting.
The awards ceremony, held at the Hilton New York hotel, honours TV programmes produced outside the U.S.
