An Ulster County man had a rough start to hunting season yesterday.

Police say 36-year-old Joseph Bermo of Ellenville accidentally shot himself with his hunting rifle early in the morning in Minnewaska State Park.

Investigators say Bermo was with another hunter in the 14,500-acre Shawangunk Mountain park, about 107 miles north of New York, City when he slipped on wet moss-covered rocks and inadvertently fired a round into a rock beneath him.

They say the round ricocheted and hit Bermo in his right arm and torso.

State police, D-E-C officers and forest rangers found the injured hunter at around 7:20 a.m. after he called 9-1-1 for help.

But police say he was so deep in the woods that it took three hours to get him out.

Bermo was eventually taken y helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where authorities say he was treated for what turned out to be non life-threatening injuries.

Yesterday was the first day of firearms season for deer hunting in the region.
