A movie charting the story of rock band JOY DIVISION swept the board at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Wednesday (28Nov07) night receiving five honours.

Control was nominated for ten awards at the ceremony and took five of the gongs including the coveted awards for best film and best director for Anton Corbijn.

The movie, which chronicles the life of the late Ian Curtis who died in 1980, also won in the categories of best director debut, best supporting actor - for Toby Kebbell - and most promising newcomer - for actor Sam Riley.

Other winners at the star-studded London ceremony included Dame Judi Dench who took best actress for her role in Notes On A Scandal and Viggo Mortensen who was named best actor for Eastern Promises. James Bond star Daniel Craig received the Variety Award and actor Ray Winstone was honoured with the Richard Harris Award.

The much-acclaimed film about the life of The Clash frontman Joe Strummer also received a nod with Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten being named as best documentary. The award for best technical achievement went to Mark Tildesley for Sunshine and The Lives Of Others received the title of best foreign independent feature.
