Gina Carano, one of the world’s most recognizable female fighters, will appear as a “gladiator” on an upcoming reincarnation of “American Gladiators,” a sports/action game show that aired from 1989-1996.

The news comes from the American Gladiators Blog.

The new version of the once-popular show debuts Jan. 6 on NBC and is being produced by MGM TV and Reveille.

Carano, 25, posted a 12-1-1 record in Muay Thai competitions before making her MMA debut (in the first-ever state-sanctioned female fight). She’s 5-0 in MMA fights, winning two via decision and two via knockout. At a September EliteXC event, she earned her first career submission victory via rear-naked choke over Tonya Evinger.

She’ll join Robin Coleman who will go by the name Helga, Valerie Waugaman as Siren, Tanji Johnson as Stealth, Jamie Reed as Fury and Beth Horn as Venom. Carano will go by the gladiator name Crush. The gladiators, mainstays on the show, compete with a revolving list of amateur athletes in a variety of competitions.

Reruns of the original “American Gladiators” series are currently airing on ESPN Classic. The show has reportedly drawn solid ratings, which helped convince NBC executives to give the remake a shot in prime-time TV slot. The show’s producers promise a beefed-up version of the show for the remake.

“American Gladiators,” which is hosted by Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali, debuts with a two-hour premiere on Sunday, Jan. 6. One-hour episodes will then air weekly on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
