Former U.S. President BILL CLINTON claims he once "saved the life" of U2 frontman BONO - by giving the rocker a ride to an American football game.

The 61-year-old was campaigning in Chicago, Illinois, in 1992 when he met the Irish rockers - and allowed them to join his car going to the sporting event, according to New York gossip column PageSix. And Clinton maintains his generous actions proved to be a lifesaver for Bono.

He adds, "I saved them an hour, and we were friends for life. We were staying in the same hotel.

"Bono gave me a signed copy of poems by William Butler Yeats with a hilarious inscription from him that said, 'Bill, this guy wrote some good lyrics, too.'
