WILLIAM SHATNER may still make an appearance in the new STAR TREK movie - producers are still making up their minds.

The actor, who played Captain James Kirk in the original Star Trek TV series and movies, famously hit out at the film's makers for not being offered a part in the big screen version of the hit programme.

He argued: "How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn't make good business sense to me!"

But the 77-year-old has now been told he's still in with a chance to star in the highly-anticipated prequel - but it won't be his original role, as it would not make much sense narrative-wise.

The movie's co-screenwriter, Roberto Orci, explains, "There are two things. One, from our point of view, we are still hoping to find a way.

"Secondly, one of the difficulties that was brought up and discussed with Shatner when we all met him and pitched him ideas is that Trek fans are sticklers for their canon. (And), unfortunately, Shatner's Captain Kirk was killed in Star Trek VII (1994's Generations).Leonard Nimoy will reprise his role as the pointy-eared Mr Spock for the new version, directed by J.J. Abrams. He is currently the only original cast member on board.
