A desperate search is on to find a pet dog locked for four days in the car of a man who suffers memory loss.

The pensioner was taken to hospital after police found him wandering about confused in the early hours last Friday.

The following day he remembered he had gone out to the shops in his silver Citroen Zsara Picasso with his dog Cracker, reports the Daily Mirror.

He said he had parked in a side street and left the seven-year-old labrador inside.

The RSPCA's Tim Wass said: "At first, we thought it was some kind of Christmas hoax because the dog is called Cracker and the man gave his registration as K900 OAP. But the police have now verified it.

"Cracker is out of the freezing wind but he must be very distressed.

"Some of the nurses plan to look around the streets to try to find the car when they go off duty.

"We have spoken to traffic wardens, police officers, postmen and taxi drivers to get many people involved in the search."

Cracker's owner, from March, Cambridgeshire, is in his 70s and remembers parking the car in a side street somewhere in King's Lynn, Norfolk.
