COLDPLAY are set to leave their current record label EMI after a major takeover which has already driven out many major stars.
The band have a five album deal with the company and after the release of their forthcoming LP in the summer (08), they are reportedly planning on putting together a greatest hits CD in 2009 which will fulfil their obligations with EMI and allow them to sign a new contract with another label.
EMI/Parlophone was taken over by equity firm Terra Firma last summer (07) and has since seen a mass exodus of recording artists including Sir Paul McCartney and Radiohead, who both left the company last year (07).
A source tells the Daily Star, "There's so much uncertainty in the record industry right now. The boys don't necessarily need a label any more. They aren't even considering putting pen to paper on any type of contract until they see what happens."
