Christchurch software developer and computer game shop owner Grant Odgers says Microsoft and Logitech are evaluating a new type of computer mouse that he has invented, after encouraging meetings in the United States.

The mouse is designed to be held between the thumb and index finger and does not require a flat surface. It has been designed with multimedia and notebook computers in mind.

Mr Odgers' company Simtrix has patented and secured venture capital for the invention, which he plans to unveil at CeBit, the world's largest computer show, in Germany in March.

This month he met twice with engineers and marketers at Microsoft's head office and spent half a day with Logitech, the world's largest specialist mouse-maker.

Mr Odgers says the talks were positive and Simtrix is having ongoing discussions with both companies.

He says the meetings confirmed Simtrix' concept was unique. "The response was definitely `that is something new and novel, something we haven't seen before', and they could see the benefits, so that is encouraging.

"It basically comes down to `where to from here'. "
