As those of you who read the XPW live report Mark Carpowich filed yesterday, former ECW World champ Sabu did not work the main event as originally advertised and didn't have any physical interaction during the show at all. Some of you may have also heard stories about him being in bad shape backstage.

According to several sources, Sabu's back is in terrible shape to the point he was telling those at the XPW show that he needs to undergo surgery to have rods placed into his back. At this point, he's in so much pain that there's no way he can or should be able to take bumps in the ring. There is no any indication that his condition would change for the better (in terms of performing) after the surgery, should Sabu choose to go under the knife.

Note from Mike: A lot has been written about Sabu, good and bad, over the years, and some will say that he's his own worst enemy at times. They probably wouldn't be far off, because Sabu has always been something of a maverick independent.

Still, given Sabu's importance when it came to raising the bar for performing in the early 1990s, both as the nucleus of the original Extreme Championship Wrestling and in influencing the next generation of independent wrestlers, it's extremely sad to see someone who gave so much to the business creatively in such a bad state, especially when he almost always gave more in one match than most who made far more money than him did in a year.
