Fall from scaffold kills worker at DeSoto Civic Center after wrestling event

An accident following a wrestling event Sunday night at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven killed one worker and injured another.

The men were standing at opposite ends of the same scaffolding as they took down lights over the stage when the scaffolding gave way, said Deputy Chief Steve Pirtle of the Southaven Police Department.

Police got the call at 10:45 p.m.

Both men were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, where one was pronounced dead, and the other was treated for a hand injury, Pirtle said.

The names of the victims haven’t been released.

The man who died worked for Christie Lites of Orlando, Fla., said Pirtle, while the other man works for Crew One Productions, which has offices in Memphis, Chattanooga, Nashville and Atlanta, according to its Web site.

The TNA “Slammiversary” at the civic center earlier Sunday was scheduled to include wrestling stars Kurt Angle, Sting and Kevin Nash, among others.

The death was the second fatal accident by a crew member at a Southaven event in the past three months.

In April, a stagehand fell about 40 feet to his death at the amphitheater in Snowden Grove Park.
