Heather Mills McCartney, estranged wife of Beatles star Sir Paul, has "strongly denied" newspaper allegations made about her past.

"Heather Mills McCartney strongly denies the allegations in today's News of the World," her lawyers said.

"These are not new stories and were refuted by her lawyers four years ago when first raised.

"The sources clearly are a variety of unreliable persons who have been paid for these stories.

"The timing of the article is clearly designed to cause maximum hurt to Heather, her husband and family at this sensitive time," the statement continued.

Sir Paul, 63, and the 38-year-old former model announced their decision to separate last month after four years of marriage.

Mills met Sir Paul in 1999 though charity work. They married in 2002.

The couple married in 2002 and have one daughter, Beatrice.

A joint statement issued at the time said they had "found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives".

Mills has been at the centre of tabloid speculation since the breakdown of her marriage to Sir Paul became public.

Newspaper reports had suggested that she was planning a television interview to give her side of the story.

'Best interests'

However on Saturday, her spokeswoman insisted that Mills would not be giving "any interviews or commenting in relation to her pending divorce from her husband".

"This is a private matter and the interests of their child are paramount," said a statement from her spokeswoman.

Lawyers for the couple are currently negotiating the terms of their divorce settlement, she added.

Last week Sir Paul said no decisions have yet been made about custody of Beatrice, adding that "we have both agreed to work at all times in Beatrice's best interests".
