Ryan O'Neal's lawyer has denied any wrongdoing by the actor, a day after he and his son were arrested in California on suspicion of drug possession.

O'Neal, 67, and Redmond, 23, were arrested on Wednesday after authorities searched their Malibu home and found drugs suspected to be methamphetamine.

"The drugs found were not his, he would never use them," lawyer Mark Werksman told The Associated Press.

He added that the elder O'Neal was "shaken up" by the arrests.

"We know that when all the facts come out, he should not be charged with any crime here," Mr Werksman said.

'Peaceful'

"He's tried to lead a peaceful life - he's acting and he's caring for his family, and this is the last thing he ever wanted or expected."

The lawyer did not address any role Redmond O'Neal may have played, and said he did not know who was representing him.

The search was part of a routine police check on Redmond, who remains on probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges earlier this year.

Both Ryan O'Neal and his son were released on bail, set at $10,000 (£5,500) each.

O'Neal is best known for the 1970 film Love Story, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

Redmond is his son from a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.
