Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has reassured supporters that discussions are ongoing regarding a new contract for manager Roy Keane.

Keane, 37, signed a three-year deal on taking charge in August 2006 and Quinn remains hopeful his fellow Irishman will agree terms on an extension.

"We've just asked Roy the other day to commit to a deal for the first time," Quinn told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I'm confident from my side we've got the direction that will please Roy."

The Wearsiders have gone from strength to strength since Keane took over at the Stadium of Light, winning promotion back to the Premier League in his debut season and achieving survival in his second.

And Quinn believes the key to such achievements, and the positive relationship between the board and the manager, has been in the freedom that Keane has enjoyed at the helm.

"We can only provide as much structure as we can for Roy and his team, on and off the pitch, so that they can give everything to the club," added Quinn.

"We won't put any restriction on Roy and he's very aware of the power that he has in bringing people to the club, and he does get our backing to do that.

"He's got the power to appoint scouts, he's got the power to name and choose the players that we go after - he's a manager in every sense of the word."
